Michigan man will face trial for wife`s 1975 disappearance from Door County

STURGEON BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A Michigan man whose wife disappeared when they lived in Door County back in 1975 was ordered Wednesday to face trial on a murder charge.

As Action 2 News has reported, Richard Pierce, now 82, was arrested in October for the murder of Carol Jean Pierce.

Police say Pierce moved to Cheboygan, Mich., from Sturgeon Bay and had a new girlfriend shortly after his wife disappeared. A missing persons report wasn’t filed for 82 days.

Police say there was evidence Carol Jean was abused by her husband, and a Sturgeon Bay police captain says Pierce was always considered a suspect in her disappearance. A Wisconsin Cold Case Team reviewed the case and felt there was information known to prosecute him.

After hearing testimony Wednesday, a Door County judge found probable cause that Pierce committed a crime and set a date of March 25 for Pierce to enter a plea. The judge also accepted the defense attorney’s request to keep potential trial witnesses sequestered.
